The Spanish Tragedy estableció un nuevo género en el teatro inglés, la obra de venganza o tragedia de venganza. Su argumento contiene varios asesinatos violentos e incluye entre sus personajes a la personificación de la Venganza.
Me picó la curiosidad y decidí profundizar en el título y para eso debemos irnos al contexto: El contexto histórico en el que se desarrolla la trama es la anexión de Portugal en 1580 por parte del rey de España Felipe II (que se prolongaría hasta 1640).
En esa época es cuando se empezó a fraguar la leyenda negra contra España y se pretendía acabar con el imperio español. Nada mejor que etiquetar todo lo malo con la palabra "español"

C’est à cette époque que commença à se forger la légende noire contre l’Espagne et qu’on envisageait de mettre fin à l’empire espagnol. Rien de mieux que d'étiqueter tout ce qui est mauvais avec le mot « espagnol »
