Cultural Diversity vs. Ethnocentrism

My name is Patricia. When I started the podcast, I made it clear I wanted to share ideas, to spark curiosity. Follow me to discover new things.

Interculture and, especially, mutual understanding, as well as interreligious dialogue must be essential tools that allow  to meet us.

Apart from the ignorance on the subject, which I don't buy, especially in 2025, the only thing that comes to mind is the ethnocentrism in which many people are involved. Ethnocentrism is understood as the tendency to consider one's own culture as the only valid criterion for interpreting or evaluating the behaviors, customs, traditions or values of other groups, ethnic groups or societies, that is, there are people who believe themselves to be ethnically superior. This only provokes xenophobic attitudes.

The cultural diversity of the European Union, the place where I live, because I am Spaniard,  is reflected in the different languages of the Member States. Thus, the cultural differences between the regions that make up the EU, added to the cultural traditions that immigrants from outside the Union "import", have given it a multicultural character that continues to diversify.

Breaking down stereotypes and reducing prejudice. A good, and different faiths sit down to talk—whether it’s over coffee or in a formal setting—they often realize the "other" isn’t so different.

Thank you for tuning in to "Living among Cultures!" If you enjoyed today's episode, please take a moment to reflect on what was explained here. Feel free to leave me a comment!
