A few days ago, the news that some universities will replace Humanities degrees with generative AI left me with a clear message: the system seeks efficiency, but we must seek meaning. My collaborative project at UNED served to prove that AI will never be able to replace the value of a book or the work of a philologist. Why? Because my project, designed to teach English to migrants and refugees, uses language not as a series of data, but as a tool for dignity and integration.

- AI processes; we connect: Technology can translate words, but it cannot accompany the emotional process of someone who needs a voice to start a new life.

- Language is identity:. My work, based on Systemic Functional Grammar, demonstrates that when we teach a person to name their world, we are giving them back their place in society.

- Pedagogy is irreplaceable: The empathy and sociocultural context that we as teachers provide are unattainable for an algorithm.

Dignifying philology today is not about going against technology; it is about defending what makes us human. Machines will give us data, but literature and the humanities will continue to give us the reasons to keep going.

BOOKS OF THE WORLD| Books against intolerance

Hello everyone. Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

This is a literary journey without borders. In each episode, I explore a work, an author, or a literary movement from different corners of the planet. Because books are also passports, and each story brings us closer to different cultures, languages, and realities.

With everything that's happening, I think reading Lorca, but also Miguel Hernández, is incredibly important.

I'm seeing this these days in Text Analysis: delving into the context and not just focusing on whether they wrote this or that is more necessary than ever, not only to understand, but to learn, and to prevent the mistakes of the past from being repeated.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, please leave a comment.

I'll be honest: I've often thought about stopping posting, not because of a lack of motivation, but because I believe there's a time for everything. When I started this blog, which was my first social network, I did so during a time of low self-esteem: I had dropped out of college and started volunteering to fill the existential void, which never filled, until last year when I returned to university, to the career of my dreams.

I've already started my third year, which I never thought I'd get to, and in the English Grammar class, the faculty has invited the students to complete a project on the subject. I chose to teach an English class, which was one of the options. The cool thing is that the teaching system on which the subject is based is what I had already done during my volunteer work: teaching migrants.

Conclusion: Don't abandon what you've started or disown your experience, because it can be very useful.

BOOKS OF THE WORLD | More Philologist than Ever.

Hi everyone, and welcome to this podcast, coming to you from the Canary Islands and reaching listeners across the globe.

This series is a journey through literature without borders. In each episode, we dive into a book, an author, or a literary movement from different parts of the world. Because books are passports too, and every story carries us closer to new cultures, languages, and ways of seeing life.

Well, I want to announce that I passed my exams! I never thought I'd get to experience the moment of being in my third year of English Studies. Yes, it's taken me years, but sometimes the time it takes to arrive seems more enjoyable, even if priorities have changed. Yes, I did a lot of volunteering and two vocational training courses, but this was always my dream.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, please leave me a comment.

That’s the end of today’s episode. Thank you so much for joining me on this literary journey. Until next time, may the stories you read take you further than you ever imagined.

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, I’d be delighted to hear from you.

Haigh, conas atá tú? Fáilte go dtí an podchraoladh seo, ó na hOileáin Chanáracha go dtí an domhan.

Is turas liteartha gan teorainneacha é seo. Scrúdaíonn gach eipeasóid saothar, údar, nó gluaiseacht liteartha ó choirnéil éagsúla den phláinéid. Mar is pasanna iad leabhair freisin, agus tugann gach scéal níos gaire dúinn do chultúir, teangacha agus réaltachtaí éagsúla.

Bliain ó shin, mar a mhíním sa fhíseán, lean mé ar aghaidh le mo chuid staidéir ollscoile tar éis dom sraith Chóiréach agus scannán Tom Hanks a fheiceáil.

Bhuel, ba mhaith liom a fhógairt gur éirigh liom! Níor cheap mé riamh go mbeadh an nóiméad seo agam a bheith i mo thríú bliain de mo chéim Staidéar Béarla. Sea. Thóg sé blianta orm, ach uaireanta is cosúil go bhfuil an t-am a thógann sé chun teacht níos taitneamhaí, fiú má tá tosaíochtaí athraithe. Sea, rinne mé go leor obair dheonach agus dhá chúrsa oiliúna gairme, ach ba é seo mo bhrionglóid i gcónaí.

Mar fhocal scoir: lig d'aon rud ná d'aon duine tú a stopadh.

Agus leis seo, críochnaím eipeasóid an lae inniu. Feicfidh mé thú sa chéad cheann eile!

Má tá aon tuairimí nó moltaí agat le haghaidh eipeasóidí amach anseo, fág trácht le do thoil.

BOOKS OF THE WORLD| Beowulf: Betrayed Loyalty

Hello, how are you? Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

This is a literary journey without borders. Each episode explores a work, an author, or a literary movement from different corners of the planet. Because books are also passports, and each story brings us closer to different cultures, languages, and realities.

In the world of heroes, loyalty is a sacred promise. But... what happens when that promise is broken? Today, in this episode, I explore one of the most silent but shocking betrayals in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf.

Beowulf, hero of the Geats, risks his life on multiple occasions for his king, for Hrothgar, and for his people.

In the Anglo-Saxon warrior code, loyalty between lord and vassal is central: giving your life for your leader was a virtue.

At the most critical moment, when the king needs his men most, most flee. That silence, that absence, is the deepest betrayal. Not with knives, but with cowardice.

Beowulf is not just a story of monsters and battles. It's a warning: loyalty is not tested at banquets, but in the fires of danger. And when betrayal occurs... no song can save the traitor from the judgment of history.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, please leave me a comment.

I will never renounce my training as a sociocultural facilitator, so while reading "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen, I decided to post on the university forum how I would organize a ball for the characters to attend, specifically to find a husband. Being inclusive, I would admit anyone.

And with this, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

True Story: A Teacher During Spanish Dictatorship

Hi.How are you!. Welcome to “The Satirical Scroll”, from the Canary Islands to the world.

It is a literary journey without borders. Each episode I explore a work, an author or a literary current from different corners of the planet. Because books are also passports, and each story brings us closer to different cultures, languages and realities.

Today I bring you a very nice but sad story.

Before the merciless civil war and subsequent dictatorship, there was a generation of teachers with a new way of understanding education that spread during the first years of the Second Republic.

Their pedagogue was different because the students were active. They were not furnitures.

The teacher Antonio Benaiges put his idea into action: to take some children from a mountainous village in the middle of Spain to his village to see the sea. But all reward requires effort: they had a notebook where the students of this school in Bañuelos de Bureba freely expressed themselves around the idea of how they imagined the sea would be and what the experience of seeing it for the first time would be like.

Sometimes having new ideas is torture.

And with this I conclude today's episode, see you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, you can write me a comment.

This is a literary journey without borders. Each episode explores a work, an author, or a literary movement from different corners of the planet. Because books are also passports, and each story brings us closer to different cultures, languages, and realities.

Today we travel to the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, where one of the literary movements that produced so many great works in English literature was born: Romanticism, characterized by the exaltation of feeling, individuality, and nature. It rebelled against the rationalism of the Enlightenment and Classicism, seeking creative freedom and personal expression. Poetry and the historical novel were prominent genres within this movement.
Its main characteristics:
- Revolt against reason and order:
The English Romantics opposed logic and objectivity, prioritizing emotion, imagination, and subjectivity. -Focus on Nature:
Nature was seen as a source of inspiration, beauty, and mystery, and became a recurring theme in Romantic literature.

And with that, I conclude this month's episode. See you next time!

When The Toilet Came Into Our Lives

Hi. How are you?. Welcome to "The Satirical Scroll", from the Canary Islands to the world.

I have changed the  topic for this episode . Now, each saturdays you will have a cultural tip.

In the second half of the 19th century, homes began to be built with spaces dedicated to toilets and bathrooms, giving rise to the bathroom as we know it today.

We don't notice technological changes because they happen so quickly, but imagine if they all suddenly arrived at once: the railway, the telegraph, the photograph, which Queen Victoria took full advantage of and had her photograph installed throughout the empire, but above all, the toilet.

In the past, it was placed outside the house and over cesspools, until an inventor brought a toilet to the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. These were both public and private. The reason is that in British homes, the kitchen was on the ground floor, and there was no pressure on the upper floors.

Can you imagine going to the bathroom like that in winter?

Migrating | A True Story About a Migrant's Broken Dreams

Welcome to this episode. Today we cross the border one more day;  lives that move, dreams that never stop, and challenges that affect us all. What drives someone to leave everything behind? It's not just about crossing borders, but the human cost paid in the soul, the body, and broken dreams. The answer is here. Stay to find out.

I'm bringing you a true story. The story that happened in my city. The story of a young man who had dreams. I will tell you!

He crossed the sea with a backpack full of dreams, and after requesting asylum and proving that he wanted to adapt and be one of us, he decided to return to the sea that brought him and that was his grave. It wasn't the water, it was the paper that told him: "You're nobody."

And you, while you're listening to this at home, someone out there is choosing between jumping over a wall or giving up. What would you do if your place in the world were taken away from you?

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

Thank you for tuning in to this podcast! If you enjoyed today's episode, please take a moment to reflect on what was explained here. If you'd like, feel free to leave me a comment.

Take Off Your Racist Glasses

My name is Patricia. When I started the podcast, I made it clear I wanted to share ideas, to spark curiosity. Follow me to discover new things.

The culture lens focusses attention on the language, practices and processes that maintain the reproductive power of whiteness. We can say we had had fighting for our place in the world: studying, working, etc, because we , maybe , nobody gave all free.

However, you can study, work, walk in your city, get health assistance in hospital without being judged. Migrants have to ask all. In Spain, the have to wait 3 years undocumented, but it is no sure they will get papers.

Thank you for tuning in to "Living among Cultures!" If you enjoyed today's episode, please take a moment to reflect on what was explained here. Feel free to leave me a comment!

Cultural Diversity vs. Ethnocentrism

My name is Patricia. When I started the podcast, I made it clear I wanted to share ideas, to spark curiosity. Follow me to discover new things.

Interculture and, especially, mutual understanding, as well as interreligious dialogue must be essential tools that allow  to meet us.

Apart from the ignorance on the subject, which I don't buy, especially in 2025, the only thing that comes to mind is the ethnocentrism in which many people are involved. Ethnocentrism is understood as the tendency to consider one's own culture as the only valid criterion for interpreting or evaluating the behaviors, customs, traditions or values of other groups, ethnic groups or societies, that is, there are people who believe themselves to be ethnically superior. This only provokes xenophobic attitudes.

The cultural diversity of the European Union, the place where I live, because I am Spaniard,  is reflected in the different languages of the Member States. Thus, the cultural differences between the regions that make up the EU, added to the cultural traditions that immigrants from outside the Union "import", have given it a multicultural character that continues to diversify.

Breaking down stereotypes and reducing prejudice. A good, and different faiths sit down to talk—whether it’s over coffee or in a formal setting—they often realize the "other" isn’t so different.

Thank you for tuning in to "Living among Cultures!" If you enjoyed today's episode, please take a moment to reflect on what was explained here. Feel free to leave me a comment!

It seems a Shakespeare's work

My name is Patricia. When I started the podcast, I made it clear I wanted to share ideas, to spark curiosity. Follow me to discover new things.

After reading William Shakespeare's theatre works, i.e., "As You Like It", "King Lear" ,and "The Tempest", I realise the great connection between those works and what happen today all around the world.

Firstly, we have a president who decides to eliminate all what he does not like. But his decisions affect everybody.

I wish, like Shakespeare's works, all will come back to the before state again.

And with this I conclude today's episode, see you in the next one!

RATÓN DE BIBLIOTECA | "El retrato de Dorian Gray", de Oscar Wilde

Hola.

Hello. How are you? Thank you for listening, one more day, from the Canary Islands to the world, Living Together Between Cultures, the space where respect for human rights through discovery and learning can promote peaceful coexistence.

For today's episode, within the "Bookworm" section, I bring you "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde.

In Victorian England, a dark era, full of puritanism that instilled fear of novelty, based on the new technologies brought about by the industrial revolution. Remember the sublime "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley.

Basil Hallward is an artist who is strongly impressed by the aesthetic beauty of a young man named Dorian Gray, whom he begins to admire and consider his ultimate muse. One day Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil, observes him painting the portrait of Dorian Gray. Dorian arrives shortly after and meets the hedonistic Lord Henry, who believes that "the only thing worth living is beauty, and the satisfaction of the senses." Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian wishes to always be the same age as when Basil painted him in the portrait and for Basil to grow old in his place.

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is based on the universal theme of eternal youth; however, the true central theme of the novel is narcissism, since the main character has an excessive admiration for himself, to the point of not wanting anything else than to remain as he appeared in the painting forever.

And with this I conclude today's episode, see you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, you can write me a comment.

Hallo.
