BOOKS OF THE WORLD | "The Third Man" by Graham Greene

The Third Man is a crime novel written by British novelist Graham Greene and first published in 1950.

It is set in Vienna at the end of World War II. During the war, Vienna suffered indiscriminate aerial bombardments that destroyed much of its historical heritage. The Soviets, along with the French, Americans, and British, established a four-party occupation system, similar to that of Berlin.

The city center was placed under the joint control of the four powers. Each authority had its own police force.

It was a dark city plagued by corruption and rife with the illegal trade of all kinds of petty goods, extending to the trafficking of drugs and penicillin.

Key themes include:

- impunity,

- every man for himself,

- betrayal and friendship (the moral conflict),

- corruption
