The Warsaw ghetto was the largest Jewish space established in Europe by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust, in the context of the Second World War. It was built in the centre of the Polish capital in November 1940, when the construction of the wall began, and it existed until its total destruction in May 1943, a month after the Jewish armed uprising began.
More than 400,000 Jews were forced to live in a small area of just 3.4 km2. To give you an idea: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria now has 378,027 inhabitants and 100.55 km².
The horrendous living conditions took their toll and many inhabitants died of hunger and unhealthiness.
