Pero basta una visita a la hemeroteca para desmontarlo: en España había una Ley de Emigración que impedía salir del país a los hombres en edad militar. Había que pedir un permiso. Con una población analfabeta o semianalfabeta y en pobreza extrema, dónde ibas a hacer trámites? Y la llegada tampoco es que fuera el paraíso...

One of the most common mantras is that Canarians who migrated to Venezuela or Cuba did so with "papers." But a quick look at the archives is enough to debunk that: in Spain, there was an Emigration Law that prevented men of military age from leaving the country. A permit was required. With an illiterate or semi-literate population living in extreme poverty, where were you going to complete the paperwork? And the arrival wasn't exactly paradise either...

Ein weit verbreitetes Mantra ist, dass Kanarier, die nach Venezuela oder Kuba auswanderten, dies mit Papieren taten. Doch ein kurzer Blick in die Archive genügt, um dies zu widerlegen: In Spanien gab es ein Auswanderungsgesetz, das Männern im wehrfähigen Alter die Ausreise verbot. Eine Genehmigung war erforderlich. Wo sollte man angesichts einer Bevölkerung, die Analphabeten oder nur teilweise Analphabeten waren und in extremer Armut lebte, die nötigen Papiere ausfüllen? Und auch die Ankunft war alles andere als ein Paradies …

من أكثر المقولات شيوعًا أن الكناريين الذين هاجروا إلى فنزويلا أو كوبا فعلوا ذلك بـ"أوراق ثبوتية". لكن نظرة سريعة على السجلات كافية لدحض ذلك: في إسبانيا، كان هناك قانون هجرة يمنع الرجال في سن التجنيد من مغادرة البلاد. كان الحصول على تصريح ضروريًا. مع وجود سكان أميين أو شبه أميين يعيشون في فقر مدقع، أين كان سيُكملون الأوراق؟ ولم يكن الوصول إلى هناك جنة أيضًا...
