Bronisław Czech : When Nationality and Activism Is a Crime

Hi. How are you? Welcome back to one more day from the Canary Islands to the world with a new episode of this podcast about human rights or other curiosities. A pleasure to be here.

Today I want to tell you the story of a man who was arrested due to his nationality and activism, because being Polish and activist were also reasons to be a prisioner in Auschwitz.

Bronisław "Bronek" Czech was a Polish sportsman and artist. A gifted skier, he won championships of Poland 24 times in various skiing disciplines, including ski jumping and Alpine and Nordic skiing  . A member of the Polish national team at three consecutive Winter Olympics.

He was captured by Nazi, imprisoned and murdered in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. On June 14, 1940, Bronisław Czech found himself in the first transport of prisoners to the Auschwitz concentration camp. However, this did not break his spirit. In freedom, he was an underground activist and intended to remain one in captivity.

Malnutrition, hard work, and extremely poor living conditions led to the deterioration . On June 5, 1944, Bronisław Czech died of exhaustion, as a prisoner with camp number 349. Some of his paintings are preserved in the concentration camp's museum

And with this I conclude today episode, see you in the next one!
