Hi. How are you? Welcome back to one more day, from the Canary Islands to the world, with a new episode of this podcast about human rights or other curiosities. A pleasure to be here.
World War II caused the loss of millions of human beings. Many factories in the USA were occupied by women, as many men were in the war. There was also a shortage of farmers.
It created a program for not missing products, and farms will not be ruined. This program, called the "Bracero Program," helped many migrants to work in the United States.
The Bracero Program operated as a joint program under the State Department, the Department of Labour, and the Immigration and Naturalisation Services (INS) in the Department of Justice. Under this pact, the labourers were promised decent living conditions in labour camps, such as adequate shelter, food, and sanitation, as well as a minimum wage pay of 30 cents an hour. The agreement also stated that braceros would not be subject to discrimination such as exclusion from "white" areas.
But it was not the first law in favour of migrants: Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, aka DACA, was a United States immigration policy that allowed some individuals who, on June 15, 2012, were physically present in the United States with no lawful immigration status after having entered the country as children at least five years earlier, to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for an employment authorisation document.
