Today we travel to 14th-century England, where dire economic conditions sparked a peasant revolt.
The Peasants' Revolt, also known as the Great Rising, was a popular uprising that occurred in England in June 1381, without much success. One of the ringleaders was Wat Tyler. They wanted massive social changes, including the elimination of the poll tax and wage caps, the redistribution of Church wealth, and the total abolition of serfdom.
The revolt began in southeastern England and then spread to London and elsewhere. Although they desired social change, the rebels did not want to depose King Richard II of England (reigned from 1377 to 1399). The revolt lasted only four weeks and was crushed by Richard, first through negotiation and then with a ruthless persecution of the ringleaders. The consequences of the revolt were therefore limited, but the poll tax was abolished, restrictions on labor wages were not strictly enforced, and peasants continued the trend of buying their freedom from serfdom and becoming independent farmers.
