MIGRANT LIVES | Max Factor Is not Just a Brand

Hello everyone. Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

Stories of struggle, resilience, and hope from migrants seeking a better future, facing cultural, legal, and personal challenges in new horizons.

Max Factor, born Maksymilian Faktorowicz, was of Polish Jewish origin. He lived in Razan, in the Russian Empire, where he had established a cosmetics and wig shop.

Despite his professional success, the growing persecution of Jews under the Tsarist regime put him in danger. The anti-Semitic policies of Tsar Nicholas II included labor restrictions, violence, and pogroms.

According to some sources, he was directly pursued by the Tsar's men, forcing him to abandon his established life and seek refuge in another country.

Emigration to the United States

In 1904, he emigrated with his family to the United States, settling in Los Angeles. There he found a safer environment and opportunities in the burgeoning film industry.

His experience as a makeup artist and wigmaker quickly made him a leading figure in Hollywood, where he could develop his vision without fear of discrimination.

What began as a fight for survival transformed into a success story. Max Factor not only reinvented makeup for film, but he also democratized glamour, allowing any woman to emulate the style of the stars.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!
