MIGRANT LIVES | The Silk Road

Over the centuries, thousands of civilizations have been born, disappeared, or mutated. The latter has happened because people decided to come together to create something new, whether through political alliances or romantic interests. These crossings occurred because they decided to leave their safe environments in search of resources, survival, or adventure. One of those great migrations was undoubtedly the Silk Road. The Silk Road was not a single highway, but a network of trade and cultural routes connecting China with the Roman Empire, spanning over 8,000 kilometers across unforgiving deserts, high mountains, and steppes.

The benefits included the spread of key inventions like paper, gunpowder, and the compass, the travel of beliefs such as Buddhism and Islam transforming continents, the exchange of food where the West discovered spices, rice, and fruits, and the East received grapes and new techniques, and a shared culture from which oasis cities were born, blending ethnicities, languages, architectures, and arts. Today we have the technology to connect with any corner of the planet in seconds, but mentally we have raised more walls than those that existed in the middle of the desert.

MIGRANT LIVES | Abuse of Migrant Domestic Workers

Today we are going to open a door that many prefer to keep closed: the reality of thousands of migrant women working in the domestic and care sector. A reality marked, all too often, by silent abuse. When a person migrates and works in a home, three factors of extreme vulnerability intersect: being a woman, being a foreigner, and working in the private sphere. Because it is not an office or a factory, what happens inside a house remains out of the public eye. This becomes the perfect setting for exploitation: endless working hours, wages below the minimum, lack of rest, and, in the most serious cases, withholding of documents or psychological violence under the threat of deportation. There is a very deceptive phrase that is often heard: "She is like family." But the reality is that she is not family; it is a labor relationship. And using affection to demand unpaid overtime or 24-hour availability is, plain and simple, abuse.

I have been studying the figure of intellectuals like Alfred Baeumler, who in his time used philosophy to justify the annulment of the individual in favor of the interests of the State. Baeumler did not want people to think, but to obey. When education turns into propaganda, the result is an anesthetized society, incapable of distinguishing between the debate of ideas and the cult of force.
Education should not serve to mold our minds according to the interests of a leader or a party, but to give us the "fire" of curiosity. True democratic education is that which allows us to doubt, which teaches us to value human dignity and which fosters moral autonomy.
My fear is not a signal to withdraw, but an invitation to be more alert. Polarization seeks to divide us into irreconcilable blocs, where the "other" is an enemy to be defeated, not a citizen with whom to debate.

MIGRANT LIVES| When Investors Take Over The Neighborhoods

Who lives on my street? "Ghost neighborhoods" (those luxury second homes) destroy multiculturalism. When a neighborhood fills with absent investors, real diversity is lost—the diversity of neighbors, local businesses, and families of different backgrounds. Social connection: true community happens when people share public services, parks, and sidewalks. Defending the right to housing is, at its core, defending the survival of multiculturalism.

MIGRANT LIVES | Why Is Hate Speech Gaining Ground?

We live in an age of paradoxes. We are more technologically connected than ever, yet it seems that listening to each other is becoming increasingly difficult. In recent months, it's impossible to browse social media, read the news, or even have a dinner party without noticing a worrying trend: the rise of hate speech.

What once existed in the darkest corners of the internet has now become normalized in everyday language, in politics, and in how we interact with those who think differently. But why is this happening now, and what real impact is it having on our society?

STORIES FROM HORROR | The Digital Dump: The Business Behind Your Rage

Have you noticed that a peaceful comment goes unnoticed, but a furious attack gets hundreds of replies? It’s no coincidence. Social media algorithms aren’t programmed to make you happy; they’re programmed to keep you glued to the screen. And what keeps us more engaged than peace? Outrage. Online hate is the fuel of a millionaire machinery. Every time you respond to that hater to prove them wrong, the platforms make money. Your rage is their profit.

MIGRANT LIVES | Even Your Wi-Fi Wouldn't Exist Without This Refugee

What would you think if I told you that the technology you use today to connect your Bluetooth headphones or surf the Wi-Fi is owed to a refugee actress fleeing Nazism? Today we delve into the astonishing and ignored story of the most beautiful woman in cinema, and perhaps, one of the most brilliant migrants in history: Hedy Lamarr.

Mandl was an arms magnate who sold technology to the Nazi regime and Mussolini. Hedy not only witnessed high-level military meetings at his home, but she also listened attentively.

What she invented, along with composer George Antheil, was the frequency-hopping communication system

MIGRANT LIVES | Being A Muslim Woman in Identitarian Europe

Imagine it is today in any European city. You are a young woman, and you are told that the veil is either a symbol of pure oppression or an absolute banner of freedom. At the surface of the debate, the discourse sounds like a simplified headline. We hear voices claiming that neutrality is the only way to belong to Europe, that a piece of fabric can erase your identity or define it entirely. It is a clash of romanticized or demonized ideals. But the reality of daily life, of the look in people's eyes on the subway, and the search for a place in a pluralistic society is about to change that simple narrative forever. Soon, the polish of the political speeches fades. Voices emerge that don't speak from television studios, but from the complex reality of the streets.

Let's talk about the women who wear it and those who don't, but who all face the same prejudice. Their experience is a punch: direct, sometimes bitter, always nuanced. They don't want to be icons or victims; they want to be citizens. They introduce the concept of "lived identity." In the famous debate about the veil, they break the aesthetic and political labels to show us a woman who breathes, works, and struggles, far from the "old lie" that tries to reduce her to a single symbol. With them, the debate stops being a caricature and becomes an urgent testimony of coexistence.

MIGRANT LIVES | MENA - Erasmus

Criminalizing migrants has reached a new level: now they're called "MENA - Erasmus". "MENA" stands for "Unaccompanied Foreign Minors." It's a curious name, because during my time as a tutor for that European program, I never saw a parent. This phenomenon occurs when a parent brings their child, mostly through the airport, and then returns to their country, leaving them, or turning them over to the Spanish authorities, in this case. Without justifying anything, imagine having to do that.

MIGRANT LIVES (I) | A Lot of Teaching Ability Is Needed

While channel surfing, I stumbled upon a program that, in my opinion, has lost its way. There was an announcement for a report on the regularisation of migrants, but instead of educating the public, it gave a platform to all sorts of xenophobes. For starters, there was a guy who said he doesn't want migrants "in his city, or anywhere else." I suppose he's unfamiliar with both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Immigration Law.

By the way, I've read comments saying that lawyers will have to be hired for this. This paperwork can be handled by a social worker from an NGO, which have already offered their services. That's better, because that way you won't get scammed.

MIGRANT LIVES | What Bothers A Xenophobe The Most

What truly reveals and defines a xenophobe is the progress of migrants: they are bothered by migrants playing sports, because they are taking up space; by migrants studying, because they might be taking places away from Spaniards; or by migrants working, because even in service sector jobs, a Spaniard could be there. It bothers them that a migrant can reach their level.

This organization, called The Parents Circle – Families Forum,  has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Can you imagine? It would be a devastating blow, because these are Israeli and Palestinian parents sitting at the same table to promote peace.

They are mothers and fathers who lost their sons and daughters in the conflicts between the two communities.

The Parents Circle – Families Forum

Tá an eagraíocht seo, ar a dtugtar Ciorcal na dTuismitheoirí – Fóram na dTeaghlach, ainmnithe do Dhuais Síochána Nobel 2026. An féidir leat a shamhlú? Buille tubaisteach a bheadh ann, mar is tuismitheoirí Iosraelacha agus Palaistíneacha iad seo ina suí ag an mbord céanna chun an tsíocháin a chur chun cinn.

Is máithreacha agus aithreacha iad a chaill a mic agus a n-iníonacha sna coimhlintí idir an dá phobal.

MIGRANT LIVES | When Volunteering Uncovers Hidden Talent

Only those of us familiar with NGOs know how they work:

Inside, there are different services: social workers, doctors, psychologists, teachers. There are paid staff and volunteers.

But I want to focus on the inclusion programmes. One of these programmes is the socio-educational programme, the same one where I started my volunteerism.

I gave migrant people Spanish classes, a language they learn very quickly. Over time, I participated in workshops and talks that they also gave. Yes. With willpower and effort, they've succeeded.

STORIES FROM HORROR | Going Back 90 Years

With everything we're going through, and given what we know of history, I have the feeling we're going back 90 years, to that time when future Nazis were already doing their dirty work, almost surreptitiously. But now, it's blatant, because social media facilitate the spread of hate crimes. The most chilling thing is that we have legal tools that don't work because they don't kerb so much hatred.

MIGRANT LIVES| There Is Always Hope

It must be tough to have no way to survive in a country where resources are being depleted. To make matters worse, having to leave the country, with no guarantee of ever reaching their destination. But the hardest part is the arduous road ahead: those three years in legal limbo, trying to obtain residency or legal status, the uncertainty.

Fortunately, and with effort, many are succeeding. There is always hope.

MIGRANT LIVES| Samuel Luiz: Death of An Innocent

The murder of Samuel Luiz is a case of homicide resulting from a homophobic gang attack and abandonment (failure to render aid) of Samuel Luiz Muñiz, a 24-year-old Spanish man of Brazilian origin, which occurred in A Coruña (Galicia) in the early hours of July 3, 2021.

Undoubtedly, it was a highly publicized case, and I will not delve into the legal aspects, but rather into the precedent it set: that no one should go unpunished for a hate crime such as homophobia.

STORIES FROM HORROR | Gaza, Is There Anything Left?

It often happens that after a while, some news disappear, but the suffering does not. I'm talking about Gaza. Because, sadly, only the name remains of the strip. The rest is mountains of rubble where the inhabitants, those who remain, are almost part of that landscape, stripped of the humanity they possessed at birth.

Today I want to offer them a little light, just as Ramadan begins this week.

While searching for information, I discovered that in the historic Al-Zawiya market in Gaza City, a few lights illuminate the few shops in a city, but what can an exhausted population do? Without money to buy food to celebrate, without water, without electricity, Gazans try to recreate, even if only symbolically, the atmosphere of the holy month.

What I've seen is that they use the available lanterns and lamps to celebrate the arrival of the holy month, despite the harsh conditions in which a large part of the population continues to live, most of them still displaced.

Keep in mind that Ramadan means spending the day, from dawn till dusk, without food or drink... And they've been doing this for two and a half years, barely eating.

MIGRANT LIVES | When a Migrant Gets a Contract

Today I want to ask you a question: How did you feel when you got your first contract? I imagine that with that income you started to cover some expenses, right? Well, for a migrant, it must be like paradise, because if they can, they'll be able to pay their bills while sending remittances home, and perhaps preventing someone else from risking their lives. And yes: they'll pay taxes, just as they already did indirectly through their consumption.

Thank you for joining me on this journey of humanity and resilience. If this story resonated with you, please share it. And if you have a story to tell, write to me. Until the next episode!

STORIES FROM HORROR | Psychiatry and Women in the First Half of the 20th Century

Greetings to all listeners. I'm back with another episode packed with incredible content. It's an honor to share this space and time with you.

This episode isn't comfortable. It doesn't intend to be. Today I open pages that many would like to close: dictatorships that crushed voices, crimes hidden under flags, silences that still scream. You'll hear fragments of memory and analysis that are unsettling. Because to remember is to resist. Because forgetting is also violence.

When I was studying for my third-year English literature exam, there came a point in my notes when philosophical currents, psychiatry, and sexology appeared. Speaking of psychiatry, the theories caused me such unease that I refused to write them down in my handwritten notes because of their absurd and violent concept of women.

The simplistic notions reduced women to always being submissive objects. It seemed as if they were bothered by the fact that their power was waning.

If this story moved you, share it. If you think there's something that shouldn't be silenced, write to me. We'll talk again in the next episode.

SPECIAL | Episode 3: Disability and the Holocaust: Euthanasia

Hello, how are you? Welcome to this podcast , from the Canary Islands to the world.

People with physical and mental disabilities were seen as "useless" to society, a threat to Aryan genetic purity, and ultimately undeserving of life. At the beginning of World War II, people who were  physically disabled, or mentally ill were targeted for murder under what the Nazis called the "T-4" or "euthanasia" program.

The third major group of Holocaust victims was a pediatrician who was held in high esteem, but irrefutable evidence showed that he was not a  hero.In the episode I talk about him.

Infant euthanasia was the first extermination mechanism used by Hitler. It began in July 1939 with the goal of getting rid of children who might be a burden on the state because Nazi scientists considered their genes to be defective.

At least 5,000 children died because they were classified within that group and, as a consequence, transferred to special wards," according to an investigation

One of the worst was Am Spiegelgrund, young people admitted to the center died from overdoses of painkillers administered by the nurses.
