Over the centuries, thousands of civilizations have been born, disappeared, or mutated. The latter has happened because people decided to come together to create something new, whether through political alliances or romantic interests. These crossings occurred because they decided to leave their safe environments in search of resources, survival, or adventure. One of those great migrations was undoubtedly the Silk Road. The Silk Road was not a single highway, but a network of trade and cultural routes connecting China with the Roman Empire, spanning over 8,000 kilometers across unforgiving deserts, high mountains, and steppes.
The benefits included the spread of key inventions like paper, gunpowder, and the compass, the travel of beliefs such as Buddhism and Islam transforming continents, the exchange of food where the West discovered spices, rice, and fruits, and the East received grapes and new techniques, and a shared culture from which oasis cities were born, blending ethnicities, languages, architectures, and arts. Today we have the technology to connect with any corner of the planet in seconds, but mentally we have raised more walls than those that existed in the middle of the desert.
