STORIES FROM HORROR | The Battle of Cable Street

Cable Street is a historic street located in the East End of London, United Kingdom. It runs through the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and the City of London, connecting the edge of the City towards Limehouse. The historical significance of the street lies in the Battle of Cable Street in October 1936, a landmark confrontation in which local residents, trade unionists, and anti-fascist demonstrators successfully blocked a march by Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists. In addition, a massive, striking mural painted on the side of St George's Town Hall commemorates the historic anti-fascist battle and depicts key scenes from the event and the area's working-class history. Geographically, the street runs parallel to The Highway and is situated just north of the River Thames docks area.

She began the diary at age 10, addressing it as "Mimmy." Her entries start in a normal school environment and gradually transition to loss of electricity, sheltering in basements, food shortages, and the death of close friends due to bombings.

It records the direct impact of the Siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege in modern warfare history (1992–1996), carried out by Bosnian Serb forces following the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zlata's Diary was written by Zlata Filipović, a young girl who documented her daily life during the Bosnian War and the Siege of Sarajevo between 1991 and 1993.

Originally published by a Bosnian publishing house, the manuscript was evacuated to France. Zlata and her family managed to leave the city in December 1993.

Njezini zapisyi počinju u normalnom školskom okruženju, a postepeno prelaze na nestanak struje, sklapanje u podrumima, nestašicu hrane i smrt bliskih prijatelja uslijed bombardovanja.

Deník Zlaty napsala Zlata Filipović, mladá dívka, která formou deníku popisovala svůj každodenní život během války v Bosně a obléhání Sarajeva v letech 1991 až 1993.

Deník začala psát ve 10 letech a pojmenovala ho „Mimmy“. Její zápisky začínají v běžném školním prostředí a postupně přecházejí k výpadkům elektřiny, ukrývání ve sklepích, nedostatku jídla a smrti blízkých přátel v důsledku bombardování.

Zaznamenává přímý dopad obléhání Sarajeva, nejdelšího obléhání v historii moderního válečnictví (1992–1996), které prováděly bosenskosrbské síly po vyhlášení nezávislosti Bosny a Hercegoviny.

Rukopis, původně vydaný bosenským nakladatelstvím, byl evakuován do Francie. Zlatě a její rodině se podařilo opustit město v prosinci 1993.

Zaczęła pisać dziennik w wieku 10 lat, nazywając go „Mimmy”.

STORIES FROM THE HORROR | 1944 Is Not Just a Song

This date might mean nothing to you or sound like a Eurovision song, but for many Ukrainians, it was their "annus horribilis". But no. I am not referring to the song, but to the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars carried out by the regime of Joseph Stalin in May of that same year. For the population of Crimea and much of Ukraine, 1944 did not mean only the advance of the Soviet front against the Nazi occupation, but the beginning of a human tragedy:

The Sürgünlik (May 18-20, 1944): In a matter of three days, more than 190,000 Crimean Tatars (mostly the elderly, women, and children, since the men were fighting at the front) were expelled from their homes at dawn, collectively accused of collaboration with the Axis.

The conditions of the transfer: They were crammed into cattle cars bound for Uzbekistan, Siberia, and the Urals. Close to 46% of the deportees died during the journey or in the early years due to hunger, disease, and forced labor.

Impact on Ukrainian territory: In addition to the deportation in Crimea, 1944 marked the return of Stalinist control to Ukraine after the German withdrawal, triggering harsh purges, forced mobilizations, and repression against the insurgency in the west of the country.

MIGRANT LIVES | If They Score Goals, They're Foreigners. If They Arrive in Small Boats, They're Migrants

Sixteen years ago—time flies—I ran a workshop in which I asked why a football player was considered a foreigner, whereas people arriving on wooden boats were labeled immigrants.

The goal of the activity was to help people understand why we accept certain individuals and reject others, as was the case with Ukrainian refugees. But I will give you a clearer, more graphic example. During the Bosnian War, which was widely televised, people had no issue welcoming Bosnian refugees, even though they were Muslim. Nobody claimed they were going to replace us or impose Islam on us.
I ask you: what has changed?

Sixteen years ago—time flies—I ran a workshop in which I asked why a football player was considered a foreigner, whereas people arriving on wooden boats were labeled immigrants.
The goal of the activity was to help people understand why we accept certain individuals and reject others, as was the case with Ukrainian refugees. But I will give you a clearer, more graphic example. During the Bosnian War, which was widely televised, people had no issue welcoming Bosnian refugees, even though they were Muslim. Nobody claimed they were going to replace us or impose Islam on us.
I ask you: what has changed?

Dam jednak jeszcze wyraźniejszy i bardziej obrazowy przykład.

Kysyn teiltä: mikä on muuttunut?
