SPECIAL | Episode 3: Disability and the Holocaust: Euthanasia

Hello, how are you? Welcome to this podcast , from the Canary Islands to the world.

People with physical and mental disabilities were seen as "useless" to society, a threat to Aryan genetic purity, and ultimately undeserving of life. At the beginning of World War II, people who were  physically disabled, or mentally ill were targeted for murder under what the Nazis called the "T-4" or "euthanasia" program.

The third major group of Holocaust victims was a pediatrician who was held in high esteem, but irrefutable evidence showed that he was not a  hero.In the episode I talk about him.

Infant euthanasia was the first extermination mechanism used by Hitler. It began in July 1939 with the goal of getting rid of children who might be a burden on the state because Nazi scientists considered their genes to be defective.

At least 5,000 children died because they were classified within that group and, as a consequence, transferred to special wards," according to an investigation

One of the worst was Am Spiegelgrund, young people admitted to the center died from overdoses of painkillers administered by the nurses.
