STORIES FROM HORROR| The Dreyfuss Case

Hello, how are you? Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

This episode isn't comfortable. It doesn't intend to be. Today I open pages that many would like to close: dictatorships that crushed voices, crimes hidden under flags, silences that still scream. You will hear fragments of memory and analysis that make you uncomfortable. Because to remember is to resist. Because forgetting is also violence.

For today's episode, I bring you one of the greatest ignominies in history: the "Dreyfus Affair," surrounding the French military officer and Jewish man Alfred Dreyfus, whom a hoax falsely portrayed as a traitor and victim of the rampant antisemitism that was already looming over Europe.

It all began on October 15, 1894, when he attended the meeting as usual, where Dreyfus was accused of betraying France and driven to suicide.

Alfred Dreyfus didn't know that the only evidence against him was the vague similarity of his handwriting to that of an anonymous bordereau—a brief note on a piece of paper—recovered from a wastebasket at the German embassy in Paris. The author of the document offered to send reports on French artillery to the German embassy.

On January 13, 1898, the famous article "J'Accuse" appeared on the front page of the newspaper L'Aurore. It was signed by the writer Émile Zola, then at the height of his career, and in the form of an open letter to the President of the Republic, he exposed all the irregularities of the case.

Finally, Alfred decided to accept government clemency to end his nightmare.

If this story moved you, share it. If you think there's something that shouldn't be silenced, write to me. We'll talk again in the next episode.
