MIGRANT LIVES| Not All Migrants Are Muslim

There is a false belief that "Arab" and "Islamic" are synonymous. The reality is that the Arab world (which encompasses the Middle East and North Africa) is ethnically diverse and home to some of the oldest Christian communities in the world, which were already there centuries before the arrival of Islam.

When people from these regions migrate, many belong to these religious minorities:

The Coptic Christians: Originally from Egypt. They represent around 10% of the Egyptian population and form a very significant part of the Egyptian diaspora worldwide.

Christians in the Levant (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq): Lebanon, for example, has a population that is nearly 40% Christian (Maronites, Orthodox, Melkites).

Sub-Saharan Africa: A predominantly Christian continent

Automatically associating a Sub-Saharan migrant with Islam completely ignores the demographics of the African continent.

In general, Sub-Saharan Africa is currently one of the regions with the largest Christian population on the planet. The religious division of the continent usually follows internal geographical lines: while the north and the Sahel are predominantly Muslim, the center and the south are massively Christian and animist.

Countries of origin with a Christian majority: Many of the Sub-Saharan migrants arriving in Europe or the Americas come from countries like Nigeria (where the south is almost entirely Christian and represents half of the country), Ghana, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, or Ethiopia (one of the oldest Christian nations in the world, with its Orthodox Tewahedo Church).

Traditional religions: In addition to Christianity, many Sub-Saharan migrants practice traditional African religions (animism) or forms of religious syncretism, which have nothing to do with Islam.
