Those who say that life was better under Franco are either people who agreed (or still agree) with the dictatorship or are guilty of supreme ignorance, and thus should be held up to the mirror of history: The Patronato de Protección a la Mujer (Board for the Protection of Women) was an institution of the Franco regime (1941–1985) dedicated to re-educating and punishing young women considered "wayward" (single mothers, rebels, or the poor) under a strict National-Catholic morality. Thousands of inmates suffered forced labor, abuse, and confinement in religious centers.
