BOOKS OF THE WORLD | The Legacy of William Gaskell

Discover the fascinating life and legacy of William Gaskell, the influential Unitarian minister, tireless social reformer, and literary partner of his famous wife, Elizabeth Gaskell. Join me while we explore his profound impact on working-class education, social reform, and Victorian society.

A clear example of his commitment was his tireless work in Manchester, where he founded schools for the working class and supported workers during crises like the cotton famine, driving education and social justice in the Victorian era.

We have to remember his activism, because he promoted and establishing evening classes at Owens College, for example, viewing excessive drinking as a symptom of the broader misery, desperation, and lack of education caused by poverty.
