I don't think xenophobia is the only reason for the rejection of migrants. I think it stems from the perception of how social resources are managed. If we compare them to a pie, the more people there are, the smaller the slice you get. But I don't want to dwell on aid programs, nor mention the Mutual Aid and Assistance Fund (MAIF). I want to focus on the reasons why, even when you explain it, people don't believe you and, on top of that, you end up getting burned.
It's very difficult to convince someone that the pie can grow (productive economy, pension payments, diversity of talent) when the person feels, in their daily life, that they themselves are receiving an increasingly smaller portion.
The fear is real, even if the diagnosis is wrong. If someone feels that their "slice of the pie" is shrinking, looking for an external culprit is a natural defense mechanism to avoid feeling powerless in the face of an economic system they don't truly understand.
