Today I'm talking about something as painful as it is urgent: when children become human shields.
A brutal sentence, but true. And we need to understand it, confront it, and not look the other way. Because when the most vulnerable are used as a barrier, as currency, or as protection in the midst of conflict, something deeply broken in our humanity has occurred.
What does "human shields" mean?
A human shield is a person used—often without their consent—to protect combatants or armed groups from attack.
In armed conflict, it is a practice prohibited by international humanitarian law.
When it comes to children, rape is not only illegal, but profoundly unmoral.
Using a child as a shield is, in essence, robbing them of their childhood, their safety, and often, their life.
