Gorée Island is a place in Senegal. It covers an area of 17 hectares and is located off the coast, three kilometers from Dakar, the capital. As a symbolic memorial to the African slave trade, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
As a curious aside, it was a veritable human market, where women were valued more than men, and as merchandise, their health, bust size, and teeth were evaluated. Children were evaluated based on their teeth and their condition at the time of the transaction. There was also a reification: they lacked individual names and were referred to by the characteristics of their teeth.
