STORIES FROM HORROR | Bullying, Beauty Standards, and Self-Concept in South Korea

Like many South Korean dramas show, South Korea is a beautiful country with a rich history, but it also faces a severe bullying issue. From a social integration perspective, this connects deeply with self-concept and the high density of cosmetic surgery clinics in Seoul. Behind this lies "lookism" (oemo-jishang-juui), extreme socioeconomic competition, and rigid collectivist standards where physical appearance becomes a visual résumé and a defense mechanism against social exclusion (wangtta).
