BOOKS OF THE WORLD| "Dog Soldiers" by Robert Stone

Hi!. How are you? Welcome to "Living among Cultures", from the Canary Islands to the world, with a new episode of our podcast on human rights and other curiosities. It's a pleasure to be here one more day, sharing stories and experiences with you.

This is a literary journey without borders. Each episode we explore a work, an author or a literary current from different corners of the planet. Because books are also passports, and each story brings us closer to different cultures, languages and realities.

When we talk about the Vietnam War, we remember "Apocalypse Now", "Full Metal Jacket" or "Born on the Fourth of July" which are the icons that give the public a vision of barbarism. But we are in the literature section and I bring you "Dog Soldiers" by Robert Stone, his most representative work. Published in the United States in 1975.

Poor young people went to war. In the novel you see the 2 faces: the happy hippies who refused to enlist and others who ended up in drug addiction. It is at this point that we can introduce the figure of the protagonist, John Converse, a small-time journalist who, after writing a play, becomes a war correspondent, where he falls into unwise circles until he sees a lifeline in three kilos of pure heroin to sell to the highest bidder in his native country.

I can assure you that it is so detailed that you feel the suffocating atmosphere of that time

Thank you for tuning in to "Living among Cultures"! If you enjoyed today's episode, please take a moment to reflect on what was explained here. Feel free to leave me a comment!
