No pretende serlo.

Hello, welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands for those who aren't afraid to confront history head-on.

This episode isn't comfortable. It doesn't intend to be. Today I open the pages that many would like to close: dictatorships that crushed voices, crimes hidden under flags, silences that still scream. You will hear testimonies, fragments of memory, and analyses that make you uncomfortable. Because to remember is to resist. Because forgetting is also violence.

Today I'm talking about something that doesn't happen suddenly, but silently, by decree, by omission: the dismantling of civil rights. What happens when the guarantees that sustain a democracy begin to erode? And why do some historians see disturbing echoes of 1930s Germany?

United States, today:

- Voting restrictions: laws that limit access to the polls in racialized communities.

- Mass surveillance and the criminalization of protest.

- Setbacks in reproductive, immigration, and LGBTQA+ rights.

- Use of the judicial system to consolidate political power.

- Rhetoric of “internal enemies” that justifies authoritarian measures.

Thank you for joining us on this journey of humanity and resistance. If this story resonated with you, please share it. And if you have a story to tell, write to me. Until the next episode!

Σήμερα μιλάω για κάτι που δεν συμβαίνει ξαφνικά, αλλά σιωπηλά, με διάταγμα, με παράλειψη: την κατάργηση των πολιτικών δικαιωμάτων. Τι συμβαίνει όταν οι εγγυήσεις που στηρίζουν μια δημοκρατία αρχίζουν να διαβρώνονται; Και γιατί ορισμένοι ιστορικοί βλέπουν ανησυχητικές ηχώ της Γερμανίας του 1930;

MIGRANT LIVES | Max Factor Is not Just a Brand

Hello everyone. Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

Stories of struggle, resilience, and hope from migrants seeking a better future, facing cultural, legal, and personal challenges in new horizons.

Max Factor, born Maksymilian Faktorowicz, was of Polish Jewish origin. He lived in Razan, in the Russian Empire, where he had established a cosmetics and wig shop.

Despite his professional success, the growing persecution of Jews under the Tsarist regime put him in danger. The anti-Semitic policies of Tsar Nicholas II included labor restrictions, violence, and pogroms.

According to some sources, he was directly pursued by the Tsar's men, forcing him to abandon his established life and seek refuge in another country.

Emigration to the United States

In 1904, he emigrated with his family to the United States, settling in Los Angeles. There he found a safer environment and opportunities in the burgeoning film industry.

His experience as a makeup artist and wigmaker quickly made him a leading figure in Hollywood, where he could develop his vision without fear of discrimination.

What began as a fight for survival transformed into a success story. Max Factor not only reinvented makeup for film, but he also democratized glamour, allowing any woman to emulate the style of the stars.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

Emigración a Estados Unidos

BOOKS OF THE WORLD| Books against intolerance

Hello everyone. Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

This is a literary journey without borders. In each episode, I explore a work, an author, or a literary movement from different corners of the planet. Because books are also passports, and each story brings us closer to different cultures, languages, and realities.

With everything that's happening, I think reading Lorca, but also Miguel Hernández, is incredibly important.

I'm seeing this these days in Text Analysis: delving into the context and not just focusing on whether they wrote this or that is more necessary than ever, not only to understand, but to learn, and to prevent the mistakes of the past from being repeated.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, please leave a comment.

Molo nonke. Wamkelekile kule podcast evela kwiCanary Islands ukuya kwihlabathi liphela.

Olu luhambo loncwadi olungenamida. Kwisiqendu ngasinye, ndihlola umsebenzi, umbhali, okanye intshukumo yoncwadi evela kwiikona ezahlukeneyo zeplanethi. Kuba iincwadi zikwayiipasipoti, kwaye ibali ngalinye lisisondeza kwiinkcubeko ezahlukeneyo, iilwimi, kunye neenyani.

Ngayo yonke into eyenzekayo, ndicinga ukuba ukufunda uLorca, kodwa noMiguel Hernández, kubaluleke kakhulu.

Ndikubona oku kule mihla kwiText Analysis: ukuphonononga umxholo kwaye kungekuphela nje ekugxileni ekubeni babhale oku okanye okuya kubaluleke ngakumbi kunangaphambili, kungekuphela nje ukuqonda, kodwa nokufunda, kunye nokuthintela iimpazamo zangaphambili ukuba zingaphindi.

Kwaye ngaloo nto, ndiyagqibezela isiqendu sanamhlanje. Siza kubonana kwesilandelayo!

Ukuba unezimvo okanye iziphakamiso zeziqendu ezizayo, nceda ushiye uluvo.

STORIES FROM HORROR | Fyffes, the Horror at Home

Hello, how are you? Welcome to this podcast, from the Canary Islands to the world.

This is a raw, unfiltered look at the darkest chapters in history. In each episode, I explore dictatorships, hate crimes, and regimes of terror that left indelible scars on humanity. Silenced voices, forgotten memories, and uncomfortable truths that need to be told.

With this historical memory law we have in Spain, I don't know why there isn't more emphasis on the need to visit them. Educational centers could organize activities to visit them and thus raise powerful awareness against hate.

Besides, there's no need to leave Spain: we have enough centers of horror to deal with all of this, for example, Fyffes in Tenerife, which were warehouses used as a detention center and concentration camp on the island of Tenerife during the Spanish Civil War and the postwar period by the Francoist side.

It operated as a true concentration camp, and like many others, the "living" conditions were horrendous. Poor nutrition and poor hygiene led to epidemics that decimated the incarcerated population. There were also psychological punishments: mandatory attendance at religious classes and Mass (led by the chaplain), fascist rites, and fascist hymns.

And with that, I conclude today's episode. See you in the next one!

If you have any comments or suggestions for future episodes, please leave me a comment.

Haigh a chairde. Fáilte go dtí an podchraoladh seo, ó na hOileáin Chanáracha go dtí an domhan.

Tugann an podchraoladh seo léargas macánta ar chuid de na caibidlí is dorcha sa stair. I ngach eipeasóid, caithim solas ar dheachtóireachtaí, coireanna fuatha, agus réimis sceimhle a d’fhág coilm doscriosta ar an gcine daonna. Guthanna ciúine, cuimhní cinn dearmadta, agus fírinní suaiteacha nach mór a insint.

Faoi Dhlí Cuimhne Stairiúil na Spáinne, ní thuigim cén fáth nach dtugtar níos mó airde ar na suíomhanna inar rinneadh na huafáis seo faoin deachtóireacht. D’fhéadfadh scoileanna turais allamuigh a eagrú, rud a mhéadaíonn feasacht an phobail maidir le fuath a chomhrac.

Ina theannta sin, ní gá duit fiú an Spáinn a fhágáil: tá neart áiteanna uafáis againn le hiniúchadh, cosúil le Vives i Tenerife. Baineadh úsáid as na stórais seo mar champaí géibhinn agus imtheorannaithe le linn Chogadh Cathartha na Spáinne agus na tréimhse iarchogaidh faoi réimeas Franco.

Bhí na stórais seo, cosúil le go leor eile, cosúil le campaí géibhinn iarbhír, agus bhí na dálaí maireachtála uafásach. Mar thoradh ar mhíchothú agus drochshláinteachas, tharla eipidéimí forleathana a scrios líon mór príosúnach. Gearradh pionóis shíceolaíocha freisin, lena n-áirítear rannpháirtíocht éigeantach i ranganna reiligiúnacha agus in aifrinn (faoi stiúir an séiplíneach), chomh maith le máirseálacha agus amhrán faisisteach a chanadh.

Sin a bhfuil ann don lá inniu. Feicfidh mé go luath thú!

Má tá aon tuairimí nó moltaí agat maidir le heachtraí amach anseo, bíodh leisce ort iad a fhágáil thíos.
